She’s looking for a new car currently, somethin SUV-type. She’d settled on an Xterra (not my fav, but it’s the best option for her requirements in her price range, $ 15-20k ). Her dad, however, talked her out of that, because Nissan’s aren’t great and will need maintenance. This morning, he sent some cars he’s seen that he thinks would work for her. Used Mercedeseses. Because a used German car for 15k will definitely be bulletproof.

$20K? The mintest Ramcharger. Trust me....

Well, if she drives an Xterra and a Mercedes back to back, she’s going to choose the Mercedes. German luxury is like heroin, then 10 years later you’re like “What just happened to my life?”

So can you settle on a CR-V or RAV-4 like everyone else. It might even have leather!

If you buy a 5k Mercedes, it should come out to 15-20k over time.

How serious is the relationship? If you're living together and have shared bills, it might be worth it to talk her into something more reliable. But if you're just dating and not cohabiting, let her dad pick the car so it's on him when it falls apart.

Live together, ring shopping. Lol I’m going to live with this either way.

Can we get an F in the chat for this man?

Old German car? Unreliable? Nah. They’re only unreliable if you’re not comfortable doing easy routine maintenance, stuff like head gaskets, valve adjustments, starter motor replacements, and crank bearings.

Hanging it on daddy might backfire if she gets a Mercedes and there are no issues. Then you’re going to get stuck maintaining Mercedeses for awhile.
Lay it out to her like this, you two are in this for the long haul and you’ll be maintaining whatever she gets and then give her your opinion on dad’s car choices as softly as possible.

Well, at least your GF has more common sense than her father, I guess?

It’s only the 2005-2007 models that are known for transmission failure! If you wanna stay in the Nissan camp, look at a 2011-2013 Rogue SV. A million times more modern than any Xterra.

If she chooses the Mercedes over the Xterra, now would be a good time to rethink her status as GF.
Also, if her dad still has that much say in her life, you guys may want to have a sit down about that before proceeding further.

That's serious enough that it's worth it to talk her out of a money pit.

I’m gonna throw this out there, based on experience:
For $15k, if you’re looking at SUVs, look at a base-model Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2011 and up. V6, 2wd, basic dumb stereo system... BUT they are reliable, just shy of 300 hp, and can turn out about 20mpg in mixed driving. Pushing more towards $20k, you can get them with fewer miles or more amenities, but the V8 engines don’t have the best reliability, the 4wd systems are fantastic performers, but not terribly reliable, and the higher-end navigation head units are spotty.

Sounds like she picked the Xterra originally so she gets credit for that. Now let’s see if she can resist the siren song of daddy suggesting a used Luxury vehicle...

Yowch dude, seems a little of a jump. She’s listening to me as well on the cost to own, it’s not that bad.
I’m mostly commenting that he thought used Mercedes sounded like a better choice than a Nissan. He’s normally super practical, I think he just has the perspective of someone that can afford a nice car, and the maintenance involved, and hasn’t thought of the difference in our situations.

Now is your time to assert dominance over the old man. Tell her to get what she wants. Independence and being a grown up and shit.
In between the time that she buys her Xterra and her dad sees it for the first time, spend as much of your free time using one of those hand squeezy springy things:
Greet him with kind salutations, a bone-crushing handshake and an evil yet calm-dominant smirk. Remember the key to shaking the hand of the dad of the girl you’re doinking, s queeze until you hear a crunch.

Yeah. Let the dad talk her into the Merc when he is ready to commit to the repair bills and rental car for her transportation while it sits broken waiting for parts from Germany.

Yeah, you’re screwed.... just treat her right and eventually he might not hate you so much, but you gotta at least marry the girl and make an honest woman out of her. Then you might have half a chance.... good luck. And until you two are married, I’d say tread lightly on contradicting her father’s advice as you don’t really have any standing at this point. You aren’t shit to him. Just some guy sticking his daughter, so yeah tread lightly.

Depending on the specific Mercedes it might actually be super reliable. I wouldn’t bet on it though. I’d be happy to give you factual cannon fodder to tell him why his ideas are terrible. Just shoot me the links he sent along. I'll go in depth on why those are bad choices!
